weekend work | multi-colored bow tie

Multi-Colored Bow Tie Tutorial

Hello, & welcome to a surprise weekend post! Normally I take weekends off, but in light of recent exciting events, I wanted to share this quick DIY with you. While I had made myself a shirt for Pride this weekend, Heather pointed out that she was without something fun & funky to wear. I didn't have any rainbow-colored fabric lying around, so I improvised with white cotton & acrylic paint to make her this piece of neckwear.

Pride Bowtie DIY

Since this weekend is Pride AND the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage across the board (eeeee!), there is plenty of reason to celebrate with a tastefully polka-dotted rainbow bow tie (or a rainbow-tie?).

Make your own bow tie

To make a rainbow-bow-tie or whatever you call it, follow along with our tutorial for making a handmade bow tie (comes with printable pattern) & use white fabric. All in all you'll need:
  • 1/4 yard white fabric (at least 42" width)
  • White thread
  • A vest buckle
  • A sewing machine (can also be done by hand)
  • An iron & ironing board
  • Acrylic paint
  • Toothpicks

After you've cut your pattern pieces out & before you sew anything together, decorate with acrylic paint. Use a toothpick to dab dots of the rainbow in a line across each piece. It doesn't take as long as it looks once you get into a rhythm. If you don't have all the colors of the rainbow, mix paints (red+yellow=orange, yellow+blue=green, & red+blue=sort of purple. I'm bad at mixing purple, as is evident in the picture). Just make sure you mix a lot so you have enough for all four pieces.

Once the patterned pieces are dry, heat set with a dry iron. Continue on with the rest of the bow tie tutorial!
